The online world at the ‘gurukul’

Emails, maintaining of social contacts and calendars, online dating, gaming, pornography, searching for reference material, etc., all forms of a part of the world-wide-web. A free access on the campus, gives a free will to the students, to indulge in all of these and probably a lot more that one cannot even imagine of, on the internet.

While it would be interesting to see what is the modus operandi adopted by the IT team to keep the free minds of Flame from wandering or even getting lost in this virtual world once the session begins; the importance of these websites, which have become a part of our very existence, cannot be over-emphasized.

I wish to mobilize public opinion here as to whether free and un-restricted access to the internet should be provided to all the students on campus or not? At the same time it’s crucial to understand its merits as well as the outcome of its abuses and its effect on the future of the student’s career. Do send in your opinion on the same.

Self control has to be learnt, not imposed. Restrictions result in rebellions, cause distrust b/w authority and the rest, etc (Apart from making working relationships uncomfortable).

Im sure all of you know this. Just saying.

But what if turns into addiction? So many precious hours a day; just plain wasted.

It is a new college. Brand new. They'l want good results. Usage will probably be monitored and restricted accordingly.

I personally feel that the internet is an amazing resource. Not only can we access thousands of material on absolutely any subject!

Although it does have it's MASSIVE disadvantage... it does cause a lot of distraction and well, a waster of time.

On the other hand, if the authority in charge would restrict such sites, it would just result in poor us (students) being bored out of mind when we have any "free" time...

I feel that it all depends on us and how we want to waste or use our time at the college, thus, as **almost** responsible adults, I feel that the Internet or other sites should not be restricted.

i too feel tht it shudnt be restricted.. nt tht we all shud get watever we ask for but i personally think tht most of us use the net for bein in contact with ppl out there whom we cant meet often...afterall maintainin relationships is also an important part of everyones life.. and moreover there a whole world of knowledge out here onthe internet which we will have to access... so m sure we guys can impose the required amount of restriction on ourselves.. afterall we're mature enuf to understand our responsibility and most important our aim for which we all are joining flame... so keeping tht in mind and with mututal trust and faith between us students and faculty i think usage shud nt be restricted.
