Unblocking of Websites

Probably by now, each one of us would have come across a message from the IT Department of the college mentioning the fact that a particular website has been blocked as it falls under a particular category.

A search on Google for information related to TVS Scooty led to several results and most of the links were not accessible as they were falling under categories such as Vehicles, Entertainment, Shopping, etc. This is just one of the experiences which occurred with me. There would be similar experiences happening with each one of you as well.

The IT Department of the college accepts that too many websites have been blocked as it had made use of a random method to ensure the security of the entire system. However, this can only be corrected if we support them by providing them with the list of sites which we want to be unblocked. They are also open to suggestions as well as ideas for improving their services.

I would like to request everyone to provide a list of websites we want to unblock and any other points of improvement so that we can make better use of the facilities which are being provided by this department of the college. You can send in the same as comments on this space or mail them directly to preeti@flame.edu.in

Oh this will be a long list. Just to start off:

Apple.com is listed as Entertainment
Cnbc.com is listed as Entertainment
Sensex.com is listed as "testkeyword"

The internet is too vast to categorize as safe one site at a time. If the problem is the use of a random method, maybe the solution is to use a specific method to block sites. The goal should not be to allow some access but to limit some.

I honestly believe that the blocking of websites is an un-needed measure. The fact of the matter is that IF someone wants to access sexual content, they will. Hundreds of new pornographic sites show up on the Internet every single day. Attempting to block them, and restricting what we can do limits the scope of our growth.

At the end of the day, we're all in a residential college to grow as individuals. That means having to deal with unsavory content in our environment. I believe that we should be trusted, as adults and young adults, not to access these things. If it does happen, the administration should be prepared to handle it.

Iron-fisted tactics have not worked, and never will work. China is the most present example of this.

I feel we have voiced our concerns and FLAME is doing their part. Also i dont know how many of you have noted but the firewall is opening up...and real fast.

i've noticed this recently. it is behaving exactly as what Parag Sir explained.

Also, it is enough if they're willing to open whole 'categories' like vehicles...i am not worried about it anymore...

The firewall 'is' learning. It does not block sites mentioned in a pre-defined list; the firewall analyzes the webpage when the user (we) requests it and depending on the content found, the firewall categorizes and blocks/allows it. Course it also refers to a pre-defined list.

But the pornographic websites are equally important as other ones, unless we are provided some real alternative. I do not see why someone should ban these quite important websites.
